This session has finished. No further updates will be posted.
Here’s the report on first practice which ended with the two Ferrari drivers on top.
FP1 has finished and Lewis Hamilton is fastest. Report to follow.
George Russell has come to a stop at the Roggia chicane with less than a minute left in the session.
Hamilton produces the best middle sector time on a set of softs and it puts him on top of the times with a 1’20.117.
Leclerc goes quickest by four tenths of a second in his retro-liveried Ferrari.
Dunne gets badly held up by Bearman in Lesmo 2.
The session resumes, Sainz leads the field out. He’s current second fastest in the Williams.
The FIA confirms the red flag was for at Ascari but also cleaning up at the Lesmos and elsewhere.
Leclerc overtook Nico Hulkenberg approaching the della Roggia seconds after the red flag came out but it looked like the speed difference was so great he couldn’t avoid it.
Red flag now, seemingly for the gravel Hadjar has strewn across the track at Ascari.
Isack Hadjar strays into the gravel at Ascari and asks his team to check his floor.
Norris touches the gravel at the exit of Lesmo one and two as he tries a lap on softs.
“The instability of the tyre is quite a lot,” he adds.
Verstappen goes fastest with a 1’20.692 on softs. “I just have no grip,” he complains. “I just slide a lot. Too much moving on the tyres.”
Gabriel Bortoleto reports a Williams mechanic dropped something in front of him as he was turning into his pit box.
Meanwhile Verstappen with his medium rubber (and new engine) has gone top with a 1’20.751. That’s already almost a second faster than the best time from this session last year, which the Red Bull driver also set.
Now Aron has a problem in the other Alpine, spinning at the Variante della Roggia.
Gasly, meanwhile, is not at all happy with Carlos Sainz Jnr who he accuses of holding him up.
Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Alexander Albon, Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto all have new power units for this weekend’s race, though Alpine haven’t changed the MGU-K in Gasly’s car.
Albon returns to the top of the times by less than a tenth of a second.
Alexander Albon briefly goes quickest in the Williams on hard tyres, but Verstappen takes the top spot off him with a 1’21.166.
Max Verstappen produces a strong lap out of the box, going just five thousandths of a second slower than Norris.
Lando Norris, who had a brief off at the Rettifilo a moment ago, goes quickest with a 1’21.513. Charles Leclerc is half a second off that in his Ferrari, followed by Lewis Hamilton.
The session has begun under Virtual Safety Car conditions.
Alexander Dunne will therefore return for McLaren while Paul Aron makes his third appearance of the year, and first for Alpine, having previously run twice for Sauber.
Oscar Piastri and Franco Colapinto will not take part in the first practice session for the Italian Grand Prix as their teams have chosen to run junior drivers in their cars. All teams must do this twice over the course of the year with each of their cars.
The first practice session for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix is coming up next.
