Friday practice is done and McLaren end it with a one-two. Here’s the second practice session report.
Gasly, struggling in 14th place, reports “something is broken on the car.”
Verstappen goes up to third with a 1’04.898 which leaves him three tenths of a second away from Norris.
Verstappen again doing a long slow lap to cool his tyres between runs. Other drivers around him have already started doing their high fuel running.
Leclerc improves in all three sectors for fifth but he’s almost seven tenths of a second off the pace. Verstappen goes seventh which leaves him behind Tsunoda.
Hamilton does his personal best time in the first sector, then backs out of his lap.
Yuki Tsunoda can’t beat Stroll, he goes fifth, seven tenths of a second off Norris.
Norris responds, quickest of all in each sector and chips 0.15 seconds off Piastri’s time with a 1’04.580. Stroll then goes up to third behind them.
Esteban Ocon moves up to fifth, Pierre Gasly sixth, then Piastri unleashes the McLaren and beats Russell by the best part of half a second with a 1’04.737.
As in the first session Russell goes for the soft tyres earlier than the others and hits the top, two tenths ahead of Norris.
Verstappen puzzled as Norris chooses to pass him on the left on the way up the hill. Second session in a row Norris has gone to left when right would have been a better idea?
Verstappen improves to third on his used soft tyres, leaving him two tenths of a second off Norris.
The Ferrari drivers improve their times, Leclerc going fifth, Hamilton fourth, four tenths off Norris. Hamilton pits.
Leclerc has rejoined, he passes Verstappen who appears to be doing a very slow lap to cool his tyres.
Hamilton gets badly in Antonelli’s way on the approach to turn four. He says he couldn’t see the Mercedes.
Leclerc goes off at turn six, he rejoins the track and then pits. He crashed on his ninth lap in Canada, that was on his eighth lap.
Hamilton is down in 16th on hards. “For some reason I’ve just got no pace, mate,” he says. Verstappen posts the second-fastest time on a set of softs.
Norris did his lap on mediums, Piastri on hards. Max Verstappen heads out on softs.
A big improvement from Norris gets him down to a 1’05.538, four tenths of a second ahead of George Russell who’s moved up to second on mediums.
Norris puts up the quickest time so far with a 1’05.905 which puts him 0.087s ahead of Piastri.
Oscar Piastri lowers the best time to a 1’06.129 putting him 0.073s ahead of Antonelli.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli goes quickest on mediums with a 1’06.202, George Russell goes two tenths off him on the same rubber.
The session begins and Franco Colapinto heads out first. Oscar Piastri is among the first drivers to leave the garage.
The world feed cameras just picked out a tribute Mercedes are running on the noses of their W16s to one of their team members who tied last week. Mark Hudson was part of their composite build team. The tribute features a sticker which reads “pre-fit OK”, as one of his responsibilities was to fit the last component to a new car before it left the factory for its first shakedown or test at the start of each season.
Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc will be back in action for this session having sat out the first one while their teams ran junior drivers.
