Fernando Alonso has joined the criticism of Formula One Management’s television coverage of yesterday’s Singapore Grand Prix.
The Aston Martin driver said in a social media post FOM should “fine-tune the main coverage and bring all the on-track excitement to the fans.”
Some viewers criticised FOM’s failure to show the developing battle between Alonso and Lewis Hamilton over the final laps of yesterday’s race.
Alonso gained over 40 seconds on Hamilton after the Ferrari driver slowed significantly due to brake failure. Hamilton began cutting corners in an effort to reach the finishing line before Alonso caught him, and beat his rival by just four tenths of a second.
The television director missed the entire drama. Over the final lap and victory lap fans were shown only the leading drivers and reaction shots from their teams and fans at the circuit.
Other on-track battles were not shown during the race either live or later in replays. They included Alonso’s team mate Lance Stroll overtaking Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon as the pair fought for position on lap 50.
Alonso made his remark in response to an FOM post drawing attention to one of his radio messages during the race. The Aston Martin driver reiterated his view these messages should be considered “private”.

Alonso has repeatedly complained that Formula One Management broadcasts drivers’ radio messages. He argued team radio “should be private” after famously slating his Honda engine during a race in 2015 and has claimed “99% of people cannot understand” F1 radio conversations.
FOM did not play any of Alonso’s furious post-race tirade about Hamilton’s driving on the world feed. Hamilton was subsequently given a five-second time penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits, which dropped him behind Alonso in the final results.
