Hyundai starts engine production at Talegaon facility ahead of full operations – ET Auto

Hyundai Motor India has commenced engine production at its Talegaon plant in Maharashtra, starting June 16. Acquired from General Motors, the facility has a capacity of 160,000 engines per year. Full-scale vehicle production is slated to begin later, as part of Hyundai’s ₹6,000 crore investment in the state.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Monday announced that it has commenced production of passenger vehicle engines at its manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Maharashtra, according to an exchange filing.The engine production began on June 16 at the Talegaon plant, located in MIDC Phase-II Expansion, Tehsil Maval, Pune district. The company also informed that passenger vehicle production at the facility will begin later, with a separate announcement to follow.Shares of Hyundai Motor India Ltd ended at ₹1,937.50 on Monday, down ₹3.90 or 0.20%, from the previous close.Hyundai had earlier announced that full-scale operations at the Talegaon plant, acquired from General Motors, are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The facility is a key part of Hyundai’s plan to scale up its domestic production capabilities. The plant has an existing manufacturing capacity of 130,000 vehicles and 160,000 engines per year.

In January 2024, Hyundai signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government during the World Economic Forum in Davos, committing to invest ₹6,000 crore in the state, including in the development of the Talegaon facility.The announcement came weeks after Hyundai marked its 29th foundation day on May 6. The company has sold a cumulative 1.27 crore units in India since 1996 and recently committed ₹1,500 crore for upgrading its Chennai plant as part of its broader manufacturing plans.Originally established in 2008, the Talegaon plant was used by General Motors primarily for exports, even after it exited the Indian market in 2017. Operations continued until late 2020. The site is equipped with a logistics distribution centre, training centre, project management office, and administrative facilities.
