George Russell, Mercedes, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, 2025

George Russell headed the second practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix without using the softest available rubber.

The Mercedes driver used the medium tyre compound to lap the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1’12.123 – a tenth of a second shy of his pole position time from last year.

Lando Norris was second-fastest on the soft rubber, just two hundredths of a second slower than Russell. Andrea Kimi Antonelli ensured both Mercedes ended the session in the top three, having set his quickest time on the soft tyres.

Mercedes-engined cars occupied the top seven places at the end of second practice. Alexander Albon continued Williams’ strong showing with fourth place ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin. Oscar Piastri was sixth ahead of Carlos Sainz Jnr.

The only Mercedes-powered driver not at the top of the times was Lance Stroll, who crashed early in proceedings. He hit the wall on the outside of turn seven soon after the session began. His Aston Martin’s front-left suspension collapsed immediately afterwards and he pulled his car to a stop at turn 10.

His race engineer Gary Gannon had to inform the driver he was not allowed to drive the damaged car back to the pits under new rules introduced this year. When Stroll asked “why?” Gannon replied: “We can’t drive back in this condition, it’s not allowed any more.”

The top 10 was completed by Lewis Hamilton, in the sole Ferrari to run in the session, followed by Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson. Verstappen lapped half a second off the pace and complained several times about his car’s ride.

Charles Leclerc did not participate in the session after damaging his Ferrari when he crashed in first practice. Ferrari confirmed his SF-25 needs a fresh survival cell meaning he cannot run again until final practice tomorrow.

Despite no more than 18 cars circulating for much of the session there were many complaints about traffic. Gabriel Bortoleto, Pierre Gasly and the Racing Bulls pair all complained about being held up by different rivals. The stewards are not investigating any of the reported incidents, but are looking into whether Russell failed to rejoin the track correctly after cutting the final chicane on one lap.
