The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has finalized the highest bidder for the installation of a bio-CNG plant at Vellalore dumpyard. The project will be executed in a public private partnership (PPP) mode at an estimated cost of Rs 69.2 crore. The plant is planned to be set up on five acres of land reclaimed from phase 1 of biomining. The corporation had recently issued a letter of acceptance (LOA) to a Chennai-based renewable and green energy company to begin installation work. A senior corporation officer said the proposed plant was designed with a capacity to process 250 metric tonne of wet waste per day.The officer said, “There were three competitors, and we have shortlisted one based on the highest tariff given for each tonne. At present the bidder will pay Rs.468 per tonne.”He said since this is implemented in a PPP mode, the operation and maintenance of the plant for the next 20 years is assigned to the private company itself. Besides, to avoid any future hindrance or maintenance-related flaws from the company, the civic administration has planned to make the agreement norms stringent. “The bidder will deposit the amount by this week, and the installation process will be finished in the next 12 months,” the officer added. He said the biofuel obtained from the plant could either be converted into energy or used as a compressed gas.

“Vehicles in cities like Pune are run from this biogas. A similar concept can be adopted here especially for the corporation vehicles to be modified like the CNG autos. The probability for it to be converted into electricity is likely to be ruled out,” the officer said.

According to a corporation report, around 1,100 metric tonne of waste is generated per day of which around 650 tonne is wet waste. Out of the total waste generated, around 110 tonne of mixed waste is openly dumped on the Vellalore landfill.
