The Vanta is GWM’s way of telling us that its facelifted Cannon ute can be just as tough as much pricier alternatives form other makers.

That’s been achieved by the use of black-outs around the car, including the wheels, wheel-arch flares, mirror covers, door handles, side-steps and sports bar.

Beyond that, the Vanta’s $45,490 price-tag represents an Ultra with extra black accounting for the $2000 premium. That means equipment levels in the pair are identical with a powered driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, leather trim accents and the electric sunroof and more.

Mechanically the pair are identical, too, with the 135kW/480Nm turbo diesel now measuring 2.4 litres. It’s paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission, dual-range transfer case and there’s a locking rear differential to back up it’s off-road credentials. The Cannon Vanta features permanent four-wheel-drive.

Safety is covered off by a comprehensive list of passive (seven airbags) and active (AEB, rear cross-traffic assist and lane-keeping assistance), although the calibration of the latter could be improved.

Despite having more power than before, the Vanta actually uses less fuel than the previous Cannon with an official combined figure of 8.4 litres per 100km representing 221g/km of carbon dioxide.

The Cannon Vanta can tow 3500kg on a braked trailer.

Morley’s attentions turned to cars and motoring fairly early on in his life. The realisation that the most complex motor vehicle was easier to both understand and control than the simplest human-being, set his career in motion. Growing up in the country gave the young Morley a form of motoring freedom unmatched these days, as well as many trees to dodge. With a background in newspapers, the move to motoring journalism was no less logical than Clive Palmer’s move into politics, and at times, at least as funny.
