The Lux is the new entry-level version of the facelifted GWM Cannon ute range, a facelift that has added plenty of zing. Pricing starts at $40,490 which is a pretty sharp proposition in the dual-cab ute world.

It’s a dual-cab with permanent four-wheel-drive, a transfer-case and uses body-on-frame construction. The big news is the new 2.4-litre engine (up from 2.0-litres) with more power and torque than before.

Interestingly, even though the new Cannon has more power and torque, it actually uses less fuel than the old version. A full litre per 100km less, in fact, for a combined official figure of 8.4 litres per 100km.

Standard equipment runs to alloy wheels, single-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, plenty of connectivity, LED lights including auto headlights, keyless entry and a sprayed-on bedliner.

Safety levels are high for this price-point with auto emergency braking (AEB) that works at all speeds and can identify pedestrians and cyclists, seven airbags including a centre bag, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a less-than-perfect version of active lane-keeping assistance.

The bigger engine and other changes mean the entire Cannon range can now tow 3500kg on a braked trailer.

Morley’s attentions turned to cars and motoring fairly early on in his life. The realisation that the most complex motor vehicle was easier to both understand and control than the simplest human-being, set his career in motion. Growing up in the country gave the young Morley a form of motoring freedom unmatched these days, as well as many trees to dodge. With a background in newspapers, the move to motoring journalism was no less logical than Clive Palmer’s move into politics, and at times, at least as funny.
