The Karnataka Assembly has passed a bill for INR 500 cess on cars and bikes at the time of registration, reports said on December 18.
The amended law mandates a 3% additional fee on transport vehicles. The new law will raise the cost of vehicle registration in the state.
Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot had given his nod to the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Act, 2024, on March 6. The law was included in the official gazette the following day.
At present, Karnataka’s road taxes are already among the highest in India – between% and 20%. The new 3% will significantly add to the tax burden on vehicles.
The amended law also enables the state government to levy a lifetime tax on EVs. Under the law, EVs that costs more than INR 25 lakh will draw a 10% tax on registration. “,”next_sibling”:[{“msid”:116460378,”title”:”Delhi special courts to clear 2k traffic challan cases daily”,”entity_type”:”ARTICLE”,”link”:”/news/industry/delhi-special-courts-to-clear-2k-traffic-challan-cases-daily/116460378″,”link_next_mobile”:”/news/industry/delhi-special-courts-to-clear-2k-traffic-challan-cases-daily/116460378?next=1″,”category_name”:null,”category_name_seo”:”industry”}],”related_content”:[{“msid”:”116422726″,”title”:”Vehicle registration fees hiked in Karnataka”,”entity_type”:”IMAGES”,”seopath”:”news/india/vehicle-registration-fees-hiked-in-karnataka”,”category_name”:”Vehicle registration fees hiked in Karnataka”,”synopsis”:”Image for representation”,”thumb”:”https://etimg.etb2bimg.com/thumb/img-size-107034/116422726.cms?width=150&height=112″,”link”:”https://etimg.etb2bimg.com/photo/116422726.cms?/116422726″}],”seoschemas”:false,”social_share”:{“fb”:”/news/industry/vehicle-registration-fees-hiked-in-karnataka/116461271?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium={{DEVICE_TYPE}}”,”x”:”/news/industry/vehicle-registration-fees-hiked-in-karnataka/116461271?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium={{DEVICE_TYPE}}”,”whatsapp”:”/news/industry/vehicle-registration-fees-hiked-in-karnataka/116461271?utm_source=wapp&utm_medium={{DEVICE_TYPE}}”,”linkdin”:”/news/industry/vehicle-registration-fees-hiked-in-karnataka/116461271?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium={{DEVICE_TYPE}}”,”telegram”:”/news/industry/vehicle-registration-fees-hiked-in-karnataka/116461271?utm_source=telegram&utm_medium={{DEVICE_TYPE}}”,”copy”:”/news/industry/vehicle-registration-fees-hiked-in-karnataka/116461271?utm_source=copy&utm_medium={{DEVICE_TYPE}}”},”cat_msid”:25384693,”cat_sub_msid”:false,”msid”:116461271,”entity_type”:”ARTICLE”,”title”:”Vehicle registration fees hiked in Karnataka”,”synopsis”:”Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot had given his nod to the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Act, 2024, on March 6.
