The Indian subsidiary of Sany, one of the world’s largest heavy equipment manufacturers, is learnt to have drawn up a new strategy to tap the Indian heavy commercial vehicle market. And, this could be done through EVs too. According to an industry source, the Chinese major, which has been operating in India for over 20 years now, has roped in Anurag Dubey to Head the newly formed Heavy Duty Truck and Electric Vehicle Business Unit. He joins the company this week.
Dubey will be reporting to the Sany India’s Vice Chairman and MD Deepak Garg. The appointment of Dubey, who was instrumental in launching and scaling up IPL Tech’s business after holding senior positions in Tata Motors and M&M, is also reflective of Sany’s global strategy to expand beyond its construction machinery business. In India, Sany is known mainly for its backhoe loaders and cranes.
Sany’s automotive business consists of a light truck, semi-trailer Tractor, dump trucks, and off-highway mining trucks. The Chinese major also has an interest in the Hydrogen trucks, a segment that’s set to grow in India. Sany India had unveiled its first truck, an electric dump truck named SKT105E, in April this year.
Currently, Sany competes with majors like JCB, L&T, Tata Hitachi, Case, in the estimated $10 billion Indian construction equipment industry, which is also the world’s third largest.
With the Indian Government training its focus now on electrifying the trucking industry, and also encourage Hydrogen technology adoption in commercial vehicles, both established players, and new ones like Sany could draw strategies to tap these opportunities.
