Materials manufacturer Covestro and printed electronics firm Genofort have signed an agreement to jointly develop ultra-flexible haptic interaction systems for automotive interiors, targeting next-generation intelligent cockpit applications.
The collaboration will focus on developing printed electronic systems that can be integrated into vehicle interior components such as centre consoles, steering wheels, door panels, seats and headliners.
The technology is aimed at enabling functions including touch-based interaction, body-shape sensing, adaptive comfort settings, thermal control and health monitoring within vehicle cabins.
“Through our collaboration with Genofort, we aim to bring material innovation and system integration closely together, helping advance flexible haptic interaction technology from the laboratory to large-scale production and delivering differentiated solutions for automotive customers,” said Weihong Du, Head of Marketing and Development Asia-Pacific, Specialty Films, Covestro.
Under the partnership, Covestro will work on the research, development and industrialisation of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film substrates, while Genofort will contribute expertise in haptic interaction assembly systems.
“Ultra-flexible haptic interaction systems represent a critical direction for the intelligent transformation of automotive interiors,” said Lingyao Lu, Chairman of Genofort.
The companies said the effort seeks to address challenges linked to integrating sensing and interaction capabilities into increasingly complex automotive interior designs.
The two firms also plan to support the development of industry standards related to ultra-flexible haptic technologies as automakers expand the use of connected and interactive interior systems.
