Scott McLaughlin crashed through a barrier at Barber Motorsport Park

IndyCar driver Scott McLaughlin has been cleared of injury after a shocking crash in practice for this weekend’s race at Barber Motorsport Park.

His Penske left the track at turn one and broke through the barrier on the outside of the circuit. The car hit the tyre wall in front of the barrier at an angle and rose up as it penetrated the debris fence.

Rescuers quickly came to the aid of McLaughlin who was able to climb out of the car despite parts of the debris fence wrapping around the chassis. IndyCars feature an Aeroscreen similar in construction to F1’s Halo but with an added transparent shield.

McLaughlin was taken to the medical centre at the circuit where he was checked and released, according to his team.

The crash occured after McLaughlin appeared to lose control of his car on the way into the corner, which is approached at around 265kph (165mph).
