The companies said the expanded engagement under the EcoZen initiative will focus on sourcing and emissions reduction across the steel value chain.

Hindustan Zinc on Monday expanded its partnership with Tata Steel to increase the use of EcoZen, a low-carbon zinc product, in steel manufacturing.

The companies said the collaboration is aimed at integrating lower-carbon raw materials into industrial processes and procurement. EcoZen is produced using renewable energy and has a carbon footprint of less than 1 tonne of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of zinc, about 75 per cent lower than the global industry average.

Focus on emissions reduction

Zinc is used in galvanising steel to protect against corrosion. Hindustan Zinc said that using low-carbon zinc can reduce emissions across its value chain. The company added that using EcoZen can help avoid about 400 kg of CO₂ emissions per tonne of steel galvanised compared to conventional zinc.

“EcoZen represents our vision to offer sustainable metal solutions that support the evolving needs of global manufacturing. Our partnership with Tata Steel is a significant milestone in scaling up the adoption of low-carbon zinc and reinforcing greener supply chains across India’s industrial ecosystem,” said Arun Misra, chief executive officer, Hindustan Zinc.

Hindustan Zinc and Tata Steel have worked together for over two decades. The companies said the expanded engagement under the EcoZen initiative will focus on sourcing and emissions reduction across the steel value chain.

“Tata Steel congratulates its strategic partner, Hindustan Zinc, on the delivery of EcoZen to our Sahibabad plant. This collaboration underscores our shared commitments to sustainable practices and advancing green technologies amongst our supplier eco-system,” said Ranjan Sinha, chief procurement officer, Tata Steel.
