Marelli has launched a new range of port fuel injection engine control units (PFI ECUs) designed for gasoline, flex fuel and compressed natural gas (CNG) applications across markets including Brazil, India and the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.
The company said the new-generation ECUs have been developed to support energy efficiency and engine performance while addressing changes in vehicle architecture and emission regulations.
According to the company, the ECUs are tailored for regional requirements of automakers in Brazil, India and the EMEA region. Each version is designed, validated and produced locally to support implementation and provide support for manufacturers. The portfolio builds on Marelli’s experience in flex fuel and bi-fuel technologies, developed over two decades. The ECUs are designed to manage engine control requirements for gasoline, flex fuel including ethanol, methanol and synthetic fuels, and CNG. The system supports calibration, homologation and customer-specific tuning.
Giovanni Mastrangelo, Head of Research and Development for Marelli’s propulsion business, said, “As adoption speeds for propulsion technologies vary, Marelli continues to support customers across the powertrain spectrum. In markets where internal combustion engines remain relevant, our new engine control units enable greater efficiency, emissions reduction, and versatility. This reflects our system-driven approach and know-how in vehicle control, conventional and alternative fuel injection technologies and transmission systems.”
Technology features
The ECUs use the Infineon AURIX TC3x microcontroller, which supports processing and multitasking functions along with security features and compliance with ISO 26262 functional safety standards.
The system supports firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates and allows integration of third-party applications through an open architecture.
The ECUs also include multiple input and output channels to manage injectors, valves and actuators. The configuration can support up to eight gasoline injector drivers and four CNG injector drivers.
Additional features include diagnostic systems such as wide-range oxygen sensors for monitoring air-fuel ratios and onboard diagnostics to support emission monitoring and compliance.
