Vedanta aims to raise women’s representation in workforce to 35%

Vedanta Ltd has set a target to increase women’s representation in its workforce to 35 per cent and launched a campaign to attract women to roles across mining, metals, oil and gas, power, and technology.

The company announced the target on Friday in New Delhi, alongside the launch of the #HerAtTheCore campaign and a LinkedIn recruitment drive focused on hiring women professionals.

According to the Annual Survey of Industries, women accounted for around 18 per cent of direct employment across industries in 2023–24. In sectors such as mining and metals, their share was about 6 per cent.Women currently make up 23 per cent of Vedanta’s workforce, the company said.

Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director at Vedanta Limited and Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Limited, said, “India’s growth ambitions require the full participation of its talent pool. At Vedanta, women today represent 23 per cent of our workforce but this is only the beginning. Our ambition is to grow to 35 per cent and ultimately to 50 per cent.”

“We are not only increasing representation — we are redesigning systems, deploying advanced technologies and building life-stage support frameworks that enable women to thrive in core industries. #HerAtTheCore is both a celebration and a call to action,” Hebbar added.Vedanta said it is expanding the use of automation, digital operations centres, and remote monitoring across its mining and metals operations, allowing employees to manage processes through digital systems and data monitoring while machinery handles heavy operations.

Women across group businesses

The company said women are working in operational roles across several businesses.At Vedanta Aluminium’s smelter in Jharsuguda, Odisha, India, an all-women team operates an aluminium production line. Women are also involved in technical roles in power generation and locomotive operations at company facilities.Following changes in government rules in 2019, the company said it deployed women engineers in underground mining operations at Hindustan Zinc.Women employees also work night shifts at some facilities, including at Cairn Oil & Gas’s Mangala Processing Terminal, where the company said women have been operating night shifts since 2019.

Hindustan Zinc has four all-women underground mine rescue teams that have taken part in international competitions. At Konkola Copper Mines in Zambia, the company said a female-led rescue team has also been trained.
