Officials said Ahmedabad currently sees about 7,000 buses a day.

The state urban development department is preparing to redraw Ahmedabad’s mobility plan, proposing to ban the entry of heavy vehicles, including GSRTC and luxury buses, into the city.

Officials said Ahmedabad currently sees about 7,000 buses a day. Minister of state for urban development and urban housing, Darshna Vaghela, speaking during the inauguration of AmdavadNxt, a public exhibition on city mobility, said the plan is being developed with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, keeping the 2030 Commonwealth Games in view.

She said, “The ring road is proposed as the final entry point, where heavy vehicles would terminate, and their movement inside the city would be completely prohibited.”

Vaghela said these termination points would be linked to AMTS, BRTS and Metro services, requiring passengers to use city transport for onward travel.

She urged residents to shift from private vehicles to public transport to reduce congestion.

Vaghela also cited long-term projects such as a second ring road, logistics parks, and the expansion of the Sabarmati riverfront, along with connector vehicles and improved parking at metro stations.

Additional chief secretary M Thennarasan said bids have begun for the 2030 Games, and proposals include four new metro lines to the airport and GIFT City.

Municipal commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani highlighted last-mile connectivity, smart traffic management and connectivity to Kalol and Sanand through Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
