The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has taken a major step towards clean public transport by launching India’s first large-scale programme to retrofit diesel buses into electric ones. The corporation has prioritised environmentally friendly transport to reduce air pollution and improve public health. The move aligns with the state govt’s objective of providing carbon-free public transport in the city.TGSRTC plans to retrofit 2,800 diesel buses into electric by 2027 and deploy them within ORR limits. Officials estimate that the increased use of electric public transport will reduce dependence on private vehicles, lower carbon emissions, and help curb respiratory and cardiac ailments linked to air pollution. Currently, 325 electric buses are operating across six depots in the city, with another 175 buses scheduled to be added this year.The retrofitting of the 2,800 buses is expected to cost 392 crore. Y Nagi Reddy, MD of TGSRTC, said the project would strengthen the city’s public transport while ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits. The feasibility of retrofitting was demonstrated earlier in 2023, when a diesel bus from the Musheerabad depot was successfully converted into an electric bus with private-sector support. The bus is currently operating efficiently under the Uppal depot, serving as a proof of concept for the larger rollout.
