New ICE cars are a dying breed as we’re forced into an EV-only car landscape, so it was refreshing to see Kia launch the K4 (effectively a replacement for the Kia Ceed) a few months ago as a car buyers might choose to buy, despite their ever-expanding range of EV offerings. Now, before the Kia K4 even hits the road, Kia is expanding its K4 offerings with the arrival of the K4 Sportswagen (Estate) to appeal to buyers who know a good estate car is always a better buy than an SUV. Aimed squarely at the similarly-sized Skoda Octavia Estate, the K4 Sportswagen takes the K4 and adds a shed on the back (a quite stylish shed), stretching the K4 by 265mm for more space for ‘stuff’, all of it at the back, with the same wheelbase as the K4 Hatch, and throws in a power tailgate. Powertrain offerings are a 1.0-litre GDI with 113bhp and six-speed manual ‘box, a mild-hybrid version which comes with a seven-speed DCT and a 1.6-litre GDI with either 147bhp or 177bhp and seven-speed DCT. Inside, everything is much the same as the K4 Hatch with dual 12.3″ screens for driver display and infotainment. Kia’s Pablo Martínez said: The wagon body style allows the K4 to compete beyond the traditional C-segment. Its generous luggage capacity and advanced technology make it a compelling option for customers considering larger vehicles. No prices yet for the K4 Sportwagen, but expect it to start at around £27.5k
