Chandigarh’s electric mobility drive is paying off. In just five years, the city recorded a 16-fold surge in electric vehicle (EV) registrations — from 1,089 in 2021 to 17,404 in 2025 — triggering a 26-fold jump in cumulative carbon dioxide (CO₂) emission savings. According to data, emission reductions soared from 5.6 kt CO₂e in 2021 to nearly 150 kt CO₂e by 2025, underscoring the critical role of EV adoption and solar power in Chandigarh’s climate action roadmap.“Overall, there is a clear positive link between rising EV adoption and increasing CO₂ emission reductions, emphasising the importance of electric mobility in achieving climate and sustainability goals,” said, as per CREST sources.
The transportation sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂), which adversely impacts air quality and climate change.
The report provides an elaborated assessment of carbon emission reductions achieved due to the increasing adoption of electric vehicles during the period 2021 to 2025.
Chandigarh administration introduced the Chandigarh EV policy in September 2022, giving a host of financial incentives and benefits to push consumers to shift from fossil fuel-based vehicles to EVs. A major jump in EV absorption was seen after the policy was introduced.
Solar power push
As per the current status, UT Chandigarh achieved an installed rooftop solar capacity of 103 MWp across 11,663 sites, with 100 per cent rooftop solar saturation across all 377 govt non-residential buildings. Most of the UT govt housing (wherever it is feasible) was also covered. These installations collectively generate approximately 84 million units (MU) of clean electricity annually, resulting in a reduction of nearly 57,960 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.“This level of emission reduction is environmentally significant and is equivalent to an increase in adoption of 14,000 electric vehicles annually,” said the official.
