Norris makes it two out of two on Friday. Here’s the session report plus Piastri’s reaction to ending the opening day only 11th.
Verstappen reports his car is bouncing too much in turn three, one of the corners at the start of the lap which has been resurfaced since last year.
Bearman is very happy in fourth place: “Mate the car is insane. I don’t know how it’s so good.”
Piastri does a personal best time in the first and third sectors, he’s slower in the middle of the lap as he locks up at turn six and stays 10th.
Verstappen has switched to the mediums for his race simulation but Piastri is yet to do a competitive time on softs after various balance tweaks.
Russell narrowly falls short of Verstappen’s time by a hundredth of a second. Norris goes fastest of all in the first and third sectors and claims the top spot by well over three tenths of a second.
Hulkenberg goes a tenth of a second off Verstappen in the Sauber.
Verstappen goes for the softs now and immediately demolishes Bearman’s second and third sector times. A 1’23.446 puts him on top. Hadjar goes second, faster than Verstappen in the first sector, two-tenths down at the line.
Norris gets a clean lap in on mediums and beats Verstappen’s time by a tenth of a second to go third.
Verstappen improves his best time to a 1’24.399, that leaves him third behind Hadjar and Bearman on softs.
After six minutes of deliberation the stewards decide not to investigate Verstappen for impeding Norris.
Joseph to Norris: “Lando, the exit of turn one has been noted. Make sure we don’t do anything in return to anyone.”
Red Bull tell Verstappen that Norris isn’t on a flying lap, then change their mind and tell him he is. Norris passes him at the exit of turn one: “What is this guys doing? I almost crashed.”
Isack Hadjar beats everyone on a set of softs: 1’24.167.
Norris moves into third on the mediums albeit four tenths of a second off Verstappen.
Most drivers are on the medium tyre compound but Haas are on the softs already: Oliver Bearman goes quickest with a 1’24.744. Max Verstappen is a few hundredths off that on a set of mediums.
Second practice is go. Alexander Albon hits the top of the times with a 1’26.149.
We’re back to the regular 20 drivers for the second session. Lando Norris narrowly led the opening hour of running by eight-thousandths of a second from Max Verstappen.
Second practice for the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is coming up next.
