‘In my Jordan Grand Prix days, the 2003 edition of this race was a prime example of taking opportunity in the chaos. The race was stopped because of bad weather and on-track incidents, and a countback error led to Kimi Raikkonen being awarded the victory and Giancarlo Fisichella second place for our team. We were fairly convinced we’d won the race, but we needed to prove our case, so we took the ECU from Giancarlo’s car to present at a hearing, and that evidence was enough for us to be awarded victory. What people perhaps don’t know about that story is the person looking after the ECU left it in a suitcase in one of the hire vehicles we’d used that weekend, assuming we were also using them to get to the airport… which we weren’t. So, while we were at our hotel celebrating what was then a podium that we were confident would become a win, it dawned on us the hire vehicle had been taken away. It took us about six hours to relocate that vehicle and recover the ECU.’

Martin Brundle: ‘Yes, Max (Verstappen) should have a penalty because – sure, you know if you put your car on the far left in four abreast, it will go on the kerb, but Max had no intention (of making the corner). You can see Max accelerate – really skilful driving through the grass, I must say – but Max made no effort whatsoever to take turns one, two or three and that should have been a penalty. The geography out there is just hopeless. It needs zones, it needs a place you’ve got to pass through and maybe even a zone where you have to proceed at pit lane speed limit for 100 metres or 50 metres or something to really make it almost as big a deterrent as a barrier in Monaco. Then they won’t go out there, it’s as simple as that. Max took the risk on the outside knowing full well he could just bury the throttle and carry on. It’s the sort of thing – if the fireproof boot had been on the other foot – Max would have been screaming about on the radio saying ‘he had no intention of making that corner’. He didn’t. For me, at least Charles (Leclerc) made an attempt at term one, didn’t like the look of the way it was shaping up, so just ignored turn two and that for me was also a 10-second penalty. I might even have given somebody doing what Max did there a drive-through really, as a proper deterrent, to stop the silliness because then it all gets chaotic.’

‘The main thing was I didn’t have experience before in the FIA Formula 3, in the Grand Prix weekends, so it was the first time. I was doing just LMP. I did LMP3 and AutoGP before, and then to have a break in 2018 and move to F2 was a very big step. So it was just, I didn’t have the experience, and there was also very limited track time in F2 because you don’t have any testing allowed.’
