This session has finished. No further updates will be posted.

Red Bull and McLaren’s rivalry continues even when the rookies are in the cars: Lindblad is under investigation for potentially impeding O’Ward. Here’s the full details on that session in our report.

The chequered flag drops and Leclerc remains fastest. Report coming up soon.

Piastri has as big moment at turn seven, catching an armful of oversteer at the high-speed turn-in to the corner.

Lindblad has gone up to second place in the Red Bull which puts him almost a tenth of a second of Tsunoda. The track conditions are improving and we don’t know which cars have Red Bull’s updates, but even so that’s a strong showing.

Vesti is quickest among the rookies in 11th place, followed by Hirakawa, Iwasa, Browning and Aron.

Leclerc recaptures the top spot with a 1’18.380.

Hadjar has gone up the escape road at turn 12, he reverses and makes his way back out again.

Tsunoda takes a set of softs and goes fifth behind Antonelli, Nico Hulkenberg, Piastri and Leclerc, just under eight tenths of a second off the pace.

Lindblad goes wide at the exit of turn 12 and scrapes his Red Bull’s floor along the exit kerb.

Charles Leclerc briefly goes quickest, Piastri takes the top spot off him then Andrea Kimi Antonelli beats with pair of them with a 1’18.487 on softs.

Piastri is first onto softs and improves from a 1’20.704 on hards to a 1’19.035, which is just over three seconds off last year’s pole position time. That was set by Carlos Sainz Jnr for Ferrari.

Yuki Tsunoda goes quickest of those on hards with a 1’20.495.

Hadjar pops back on top with a 1’20.128. The three medium-shod drivers are on top – as in Austin the hard is two steps harder than the medium.

Oscar Piastri is running on the hards and goes fastest with a 1’21.570.

Isack Hadjar, one of few drivers running on mediums, goes fastest with a 1’22.001. That’s over six seconds off last year’s pole position time.

As usual it’s very dusty at Mexico City’s Formula 1 circuit as the session begins. Track temperature is already 49C.

The session is go at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Nine regular drivers will set this session out as their teams will run rookies, in order to fulfil their obligation under the rules. The changes are as follows:
Arvid Lindblad in Max Verstappen’s Red Bull
Pato O’Ward in Lando Norris’s McLaren
Antonio Fuoco in Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari
Frederik Vesti in George Russell’s Mercedes
Jak Crawford in Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin
