Lance Stroll’s losing streak to team mate Fernando Alonso continued in Austin, where he was beaten for the 30th grand prix in a row.
Gaps between team mates
Stroll dropped out in the first round of qualifying, as he did in the previous event in Singapore. He initially set a time which looked quick enough to gain him a place in Q2, but it was deleted due to a track limits infringement.
That also increased the gap between the two Aston Martin drivers, which was almost eight tenths of a second based on the only time of Stroll’s which stood from Q1. Alonso went on to reach Q3, for the second event in a row, and qualify 10th.
Stroll was 18th in the qualifying results but making matters worse he has a five-place grid penalty for his collision with Esteban Ocon in the sprint race.
Team mate battles
Not only has Stroll lost to Alonso in every grand prix qualifying session this year, he also did so over the last 12 rounds of 2024. He hasn’t qualified ahead of his team mate since last year’s British Grand Prix, 30 rounds ago.
Alonso has the longest run of qualifying victories over a team mate of any driver on the grid. Max Verstappen is closest with a 25-round streak spread across three different team mates. He has beaten Yuki Tsunoda for the last 16 rounds running, Liam Lawson the two before that and Sergio Perez for the previous seven.
