Jak Crawford, Aston Martin, Red Bull Ring, 2024

Jak Crawford will make his first appearance in an official Formula 1 practice session with Aston Martin in Mexico next week.

The Formula 2 driver will take over Lance Stroll’s car for the opening practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Crawford was previously a member of Red Bull’s young driver programme but joined Aston Martin last year. He lies second in the championship in his third year in F2, having won four races this year.

He has already driven the team’s F1 cars in testing. Aston Martin team principal Andy Cowell said Crawford has “shown real maturity and provided strong technical feedback throughout the year, and these sessions are an important part of how we develop young talent.”

All teams must give practice opportunities to drivers with limited F1 experience on a total of four occasions over the season. Crawford joins three other previously confirmed drivers for Mexico: Pato O’Ward at McLaren, Luke Browning at Williams and Ryo Hirakawa at Haas.

NB. Jack Doohan drove in the first two first practice sessions of 2025 for Alpine before he had started more than two grands prix and could therefore have qualified to count as a junior driver. However the team chose not to nominate him as such a driver for these two appearances. Felipe Drugovich replaced Fernando Alonso for first practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix but this change occured too late for him to be nominated.
