‘good-shout-on-staying-out’:-did-verstappen-consider-a-second-pit-stop-in-singapore?

Did Max Verstappen consider making a second pit stop in the Singapore Grand Prix – or were Red Bull trying to provoke McLaren into pitting twice?

Verstappen, who finished second ahead of the two McLaren drivers, thanked his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase at the end of the race for his decision on “staying out”.

The Red Bull driver grappled with his car for much of the race, particularly after running wide at turn 14 and losing almost two seconds on lap 36. Later he exchanged messages with Lambiase which appeared to indicate they were exploring the possibility of pitting him a second time.

The higher pit lane speed limit in Singapore this year meant an additional pit stop would have cost them less time. Lewis Hamilton did make a second pit stop, though he was in the advantageous position of knowing he would not lose any positions by coming in.

Verstappen, however, would have fallen behind both McLaren drivers had he pitted. That likely made the idea a non-starter, even though he would have had the advantage of soft tyres to attack them with. It’s also possible any discussion around a potential second pit stop might just have been a ruse to distract McLaren or lead them into a strategic error.

Box and pit confirm

Behind Verstappen, Norris and McLaren discussed their pit stop timing at length. In contrast, Red Bull didn’t mention the timing of Verstappen’s tyre change until they called him in.

I need help for this hairpin

Verstappen reported he was having difficulty with the sharp corner at turn 13. Red Bull offered some settings changes to assist with it, but then he ran wide at another corner, which halved his lead over Norris to around two seconds.

Lap: 34/62 VER: 1’35.815
VerstappenI need help for this hairpin, 13. So much lost grip on entry.
LambiaseLack of rear on entry?
VerstappenAh, just no stability.
LambiaseOkay, understood, standby.
Lap: 35/62 VER: 1’35.898
LambiaseOkay, let’s try the push toggle first Max, if that’s insufficient we’ll look at brake bias.
VerstappenNo, that doesn’t work, we tried on the soft.
LambiaseOkay, let’s have a look at B-bal six then.
LambiaseApproaching turn 10
B-bal six from here.
Lap: 36/62 VER: 1’37.774
LambiaseOkay, this lap we’ll have a look at torque nine Max. Top four cars, same pace. So just reminder, exit turn nine, let’s have a look at torque nine. Oh, you’re in torque nine now, apologies.
VerstappenVerstappen locks up and runs wide at turn 14
Fuck’s sake man, it’s so shit to drive.
Lap: 38/62 VER: 1’36.064
LambiaseUse gear eight.
Lap: 39/62 VER: 1’36.298

VerstappenYeah the rear is like a handbrake, please help.
LambiaseOkay, let’s have B-bal six, please, and torque nine. B-bal six, torque nine, then you can go mid-five to help.

This lap’s still three tenths quicker than Lando

Several drivers’ radio messages were unclear at times in Singapore. In response to one of Verstappen’s less clear messages, Lambiase reassured him he was still lapping quicker than Norris, who was almost within DRS range of him.

Meanwhile the leaders were also catching a string of backmarkers which slowed them down by several seconds over the next few laps. Red Bull may have considered bringing Verstappen in at this point if they feared they were in serious danger of being passed by Norris on-track, and if they felt he could catch and pass the McLaren on a set of softs, having already run those tyres earlier in the race.

Lap: 42/62 VER: 1’36.448
LambiaseMax, if you don’t feel you need mid-four, then happy to go a bit more conservative on that.
VerstappenMate, the balance is really off, it’s undrivable.
LambiaseYep, I understand, you are on an older tyre. Same pace to Russell ahead. Lando’s obviously made a mistake as well, behind 37.0. Diff is a little bit open for our liking at 13. You’re better off getting yourself a more stable car than something that’s unpredictable on the rear.
Verstappen[Unclear]
Lap: 43/62 VER: 1’37.090
LambiaseThis lap’s still three tenths quicker than Lando. There’ll be Stroll ahead.
Lap: 44/62 VER: 1’36.872
LambiaseRussell ahead, same pace.
Lap: 45/62 VER: 1’37.805
LambiaseYellow flags ahead, yellows.

We are monitoring. At this stage, there’s not many options

Verstappen appeared to suggest a pit stop as he neared the end of lap 46. Lambiase told him they were monitoring the situation but they had few options. Pitting at this time would have dropped him behind both McLaren drivers.

Gap, hello?

Lambiase usually kept his driver aware of how close Norris was, but at one point Verstappen had to ask for an update – which was the moment Norris came closest to attacking on the outside of turn seven:

After taking the chequered flag, Verstappen told Lambiase that staying out had been the right thing to do.

Chequered flag
LambiaseWell managed Max, really good stint.
VerstappenYeah, well, that was not easy, mate. Yeah, I’ll debrief after the race, but that was not straightforward at all. But, yeah, I think I know why. Just a bit weird with the engine, with the downshifts and upshifts, the whole race. It’s making it very difficult to be consistent. I think anyway [unclear] with the soft and then the hard just to keep second.
LambiaseYeah good job, mate. Pretty much everybody raced where they were from turn three on lap one. That’s what it is around here. Nice job. Plenty of pick-up, please.
VerstappenYeah, good shout with the, like, staying out. Because when I was in that traffic, everything felt really awful. But then when I was in clean air, it started to recover a little bit.
LambiaseYep, understood.
MekiesWell done, Max. It was super-hard out there and you got everything out that was possible today so well done. We’ve made a step forward and we know we have more coming. So good stuff.
VerstappenYeah, again, a solid weekend, [unclear] points again. So let’s keep going. Thank you everyone.
