Nitin Gadkari says that the prices of electric vehicles (EVs) in India are expected to reach parity with petrol-powered vehicles within the next four to six months.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday said that the prices of electric vehicles (EVs) in India are expected to reach parity with petrol-powered vehicles within the next four to six months.According to a PTI report, while speaking at the 20th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2025, Gadkari highlighted India’s heavy dependence on fossil fuels, describing it as both an economic burden and an environmental challenge. He noted that the country spends about ₹22 lakh crore annually on fuel imports, underscoring the urgency of adopting clean energy solutions.“Within the next 4-6 months, the cost of EVs will be equivalent to the cost of petrol vehicles,” Gadkari said, emphasising that affordable EVs are a critical step towards sustainable mobility in India.

Boost to automobile sector

The minister also outlined ambitious plans for the domestic automobile sector, stating, “Within five years, our target is to make India’s automobile industry the number one in the world”. He noted that the industry has grown from ₹14 lakh crore when he assumed office to the current ₹22 lakh crore, though it still lags behind the US (₹78 lakh crore) and China (₹47 lakh crore).

Gadkari further highlighted progress in alternative fuels, revealing that farmers have earned an additional ₹45,000 crore by producing ethanol from corn, supporting India’s drive towards cleaner and self-reliant energy sources.

With EV costs set to align with conventional vehicles and strong government support for clean energy, India is poised for a significant shift towards sustainable transportation in the near future.
