Maruti Suzuki becomes first carmaker to dispatch vehicles to Kashmir by rail

New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has become the first automobile manufacturer in India to transport vehicles to the Kashmir valley via Indian Railways.

The maiden train carried over 100 vehicles, including Brezza, Dzire, WagonR, and S-Presso, departing from Maruti Suzuki’s newly inaugurated Manesar in-plant railway siding. The train travelled more than 850 kilometres to reach the Anantnag railway terminal in Jammu & Kashmir, crossing the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab river, inaugurated earlier this year as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, Electronics & IT, said the move demonstrates the transformative impact of the Jammu–Srinagar railway line. “Apples from the valley were already transported using this rail link. Now, Maruti Suzuki cars will also reach the region efficiently. This line is a game changer for the people of Jammu & Kashmir,” he said.Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, highlighted the strategic role of rail in the company’s logistics. “Railway dispatches are central to our operations.
