Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin, Singapore, 2025

Aston Martin were fastest in practice for the first time this year as Fernando Alonso set the pace in Singapore.

Alonso’s best lap of 1’31.116 on soft tyres was six-tenths of a second quicker than the best time in the same session 12 months ago. That was set by Charles Leclerc, who was second-quickest for Ferrari today, a tenth of a second off Alonso.

Pre-race favourites McLaren were bumped back to fourth-fastest team in the opening session as Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull. He was consistently quick on the hard tyres earlier in the session, then set a 1’31.392 on softs.

Lewis Hamilton was fourth for Ferrari and irritated Oscar Piastri by sitting on the racing line on the run to turn one as the McLaren approached him on one lap. “Ferrari will invent mirrors one day, I hope,” the exasperated McLaren driver remarked.

Piastri eventually got a clear lap in for fifth place, almost two-tenths of a second faster than his team mate.

Isack Hadjar set several strong times earlier in the session and ended up quickest of the Racing Bulls pair in seventh place. Carlos Sainz Jnr was only a few hundredths of a second behind him and was the highest-placed driver who did not use the soft tyres, having set his best time on mediums.

Sainz’s team mate was the only driver who failed to set a time during the session. Alexander Albon pitted at the end of his second lap with his rear brakes ablaze.

Albon’s smoky arrival caused some consternation in the Williams garage. Their mechanics set about both extinguishing the fire and pushing the FW47 into the garage, then reconsidered their approach as the smoke grew thicker and pushed the car back into the pit lane. It took several minutes to put the brake fire out, and Albon was unable to take any further part in the session as a result.

There were no disruptions and no significant incidents during the session. Yuki Tsunoda lapped just under half a second off Verstappen for ninth and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10 for Haas.

Neither Mercedes driver used the soft tyres during the session and both ended up outside the top 10. Lance Stroll did use the softs but couldn’t get a clear lap in and ended the session almost two seconds off Alonso in 18th.
