New Delhi: The Delhi government will soon begin clearing pending electric vehicle (EV) subsidy dues amounting to about ₹140 crore, officials said on Monday as per PTI.
Transport Minister Pankaj Singh confirmed that the department will verify all subsidy applications to resolve the backlog, which has piled up over the past two years. “The process of identifying eligible beneficiaries has already started,” an official said. A dedicated portal for clearing dues is also being prepared.
The development follows a September 3 Delhi High Court directive asking the government to take immediate steps to release subsidies promised under the 2020 Delhi EV Policy. The court observed that procedural hurdles could not be used as an excuse to delay payments, noting that the policy does not prescribe a timeline for disbursal.
What led to the delays?
Officials said delays were triggered last year after the arrest of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case, which stalled cabinet meetings and led to the policy not being extended on time. Since the launch of the policy in August 2020, more than 2.19 lakh vehicles have availed tax exemptions, including 1.09 lakh two-wheelers and 83,724 three-wheelers. The government had disbursed ₹177 crore in incentives till 2023. The EV policy, which had lapsed in August 2023, was extended last month until March 31, 2026, while the draft of a new EV Policy 2.0 undergoes public consultation. A committee headed by Minister Ashish Sood has been formed to oversee its formulation.
