Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) on Friday announced the launch of Future-In-Charge, a skilling programme aimed at training charge point operators (CPOs) to support India’s electric vehicle (EV) charging ecosystem.According to the official press release, approved by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training and endorsed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the programme combines classroom learning with practical training on charging infrastructure. The pilot batch of 60 trainees has already begun at TERI’s Gwal Pahari campus, with plans to scale nationwide, it added. The initiative was unveiled at the Mercedes-Benz Sustainability Dialogue India 2025, alongside a whitepaper titled EV Charging in India: Ecosystem Perspectives and Skilling Opportunities.
The study which was based on consultations with 150 experts identified gaps such as limited hands-on training, lack of standardised modules and shortage of qualified trainers. It found that nearly half of the skill requirements for CPOs lie in installation, testing and IoT-enabled applications.
MBRDI Managing Director and CEO Manu Saale said the programme would bridge systemic gaps and inspire similar global initiatives, while TERI Director General Vibha Dhawan called it a crucial step towards creating a skilled workforce for India’s clean mobility transition.
