Automobile retailers and the public attribute the growing demand for EV adoption to the increasing fuel costs and high maintenance costs of vehicles that run on fossil fuels.

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) for daily commutes is gaining traction across Andhra Pradesh. In the first quarter of FY 2025–26 alone, 5,789 EVs were registered with the AP Transport Department, with electric two-wheelers leading the surge.

According to the data obtained by the TOI from the AP Transport Department on the registration of EVs in the state, around one lakh electric vehicles were registered from 2022 until June 30, 2025. Out of the nearly one lakh registered electric vehicles, electric motorbikes and scooters account for 85% of the total vehicles, with 84,560 plus two-wheeler electric vehicles registered in the state. Moreover, Visakhapatnam district has the highest number, with 13,791 electric two-wheeler motorbikes and scooters registered in the last three years.

The major class of vehicles under the EV sector includes motorbikes and scooters, followed by motor cabs, three-wheeler goods and passenger vehicles, e-rickshaws, goods carriers, and others.

Automobile retailers and the public attribute the growing demand for EV adoption to the increasing fuel costs and high maintenance costs of vehicles that run on fossil fuels.

“Petrol prices in state are the highest when compared to other states. Along with petrol, household expenditure is spiralling with each passing month. Buying an EV bike drastically reduced my monthly petrol bill, helping me to save approximately Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 monthly and around Rs 15,000 annually,” Bala Narayana, a resident of Bhavani Puram, said.

EV two-wheeler retailers in the city say there has been growing demand for EV bikes, particularly with the arrival of new EV brands like Ola in the segment, which have popularised the trend with enquiries from consumers seeing a sharp spike in recent months.

However, the retailers mentioned that the concentration of charging infrastructure is low, which is acting as a deterrent among potential customers, causing them to back away from buying EV cars in the state. “The govt should take the lead and build more charging points alongside national highways and within key cities, besides encouraging private operators to set up charging points by giving requisite sops to enable and allow more people to buy EV cars in the state,” a city-based private EV dealer commented.
