Yuki Tsunoda, Red Bull, Spa-Francorchamps, 2025

Yuki Tsunoda says he feels a confidence boost heading into this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix having run Red Bull’s new floor for the first time last weekend.

Since his crash at Imola in May, Tsunoda has not had the same car specification as team mate Max Verstappen. However Red Bull were able to install a newer floor on his RB21 between the sprint race and grand prix qualifying session last weekend.

Tsunoda qualified seventh on the grid, three places behind Verstappen, which was his best starting position since joining Red Bull at the third round of the season. However he fell out of the points during the grand prix when his race engineer told him to pit for slick tyres too late as the track dried and he had to complete an extra lap on intermediates.

However he is hopeful of a better weekend at the Hungaroring. “I am looking forward to getting back in the car,” said Tsunoda. “Things felt really positive during and after qualifying with the updated floor on the car.

“The race didn’t go to plan, but the performance I felt in the car has given me confidence moving into the final race before the summer break.”

Tsunoda is only 17th in the points standings after 13 rounds, the first two of which he spent at Racing Bulls. He hasn’t scored a point since finishing 10th at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

Team principal Laurent Mekies said the team made a positive step with the upgrade it introduced last weekend.

“The team is happy with the upgrade package,” he said, “there is no question as to whether we brought performance to the car, we absolutely feel we did.

“Does it fix all the limitations in the car? No, but it is a step forwards.”
