  • The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV was spotted charging out in public with no camouflage even though it hasn’t been officially revealed.
  • The prototype was seen juicing up from a Tesla Supercharger in Southern California, using its native NCAS port.
  • The design looks like an incremental evolution of the previous model to the point where some people may not even notice it’s the new model.

The new Chevrolet Bolt EV isn’t officially out yet, but General Motors doesn’t seem interested in hiding it anymore.

One blue 2027 Chevy Bolt was spotted without any camouflage charging at a Tesla Supercharger in Southern California. We doubt this is an accident, and it could be Chevy’s way of showing off the vehicle without an official unveil—who knows what marketing tactics automakers employ these days. Instagram user chargepozitive got the scoop, which we first spotted on GM Authority

Did GM think nobody would notice that it’s the new model and expected everybody to confuse it with the old Bolt EV? Well, given how similar it looks to its predecessor, this could be one explanation. GM previously teased parts of the new Bolt, including its front and rear light design as well as the fact that it was going to come with a native NACS plug allowing it to use Tesla chargers.

Before examining the new car’s design, I had to pull up photos of the old model to make sure this really is the new one. They’re very similar, and the new model looks like an incremental evolution with similar fascias, as well as an almost identical overall shape and window line.

You can clearly tell that this is the new one by the fact that there’s no longer a dip in the window line after the side mirror. It is straight, rising more gently toward the rear than in the old model before it kinks up suddenly around the middle of the rear door, clearly showing that it is, indeed, a different car. This looks dramatic from the outside, but it means rear occupants have less side glass to look out through.

The rear lights are simpler than on the previous model and they were clearly designed to give the new Bolt EV the current Chevy family look. The same goes for the front, although the front fascia design hasn’t changed all that much since the last Bolt was on sale, so it doesn’t look as different. Its frontal design is closer to the larger Blazer EV than the smaller electric Equinox, which has a full-width light bar.

The lucky Instagram shooter didn’t upload any shots of the interior, so its design will remain a mystery until GM officially unveils the car. It is expected to adopt the same 11-inch digital driver’s display, but we don’t know much more aside from that.

The new Bolt rides on an evolution of GM’s front-motor, front-wheel drive BEV2 platform that underpinned its predecessor. Powering it will be a new LFP battery pack with cells from China, which will help keep the cost down, allowing GM to price the Bolt EV at or below $30,000, while still turning a profit on it.

The new Bolt will return for the 2027 model year with no federal tax credit to drop its price into the low $20,000 range, like its predecessor.
