“We’ll go aggressive”: Every radio message from Verstappen’s pit-to-podium masterclass

Max Verstappen made Interlagos his personal playground again as he swept to an unlikely podium finish after starting in the pits.

Red Bull faced a tricky tactical call as the final laps ticked down. Verstappen found himself in the lead on a fading set of medium compound tyres.

He admitted he was unsure whether to eke them out until the end of the race or pit for a fresh set of softs. Eventually Red Bull took the plunge: “we’ll go aggressive” said race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase as they brought Verstappen in.

The team hoped that would give him a chance to take second place. He got close, but Andrea Kimi Antonelli had just enough in reserve to deny him second place.

Verstappen’s Brazilian Grand Prix radio messages

“Check my car, a lot of debris went flying”
“I don’t think a hard tyre is good”
“That’s Russell ahead now”
“Amazingly you are only 18 seconds to the leader”
“We’ll go aggressive”
“One more opportunity into turn one”
“Don’t just sit there and be happy with second”

“Check my car, a lot of debris went flying”

Transcript: “That’s how we silence them”: Verstappen’s stunning 2024 Brazilian GP win from start to finish

When Verstappen’s team mate Yuki Tsunoda started the sprint race from the pit lane 24 hours earlier he had to be waved away by a flag marshal as the exit lights weren’t working. They were fixed in time for Sunday, so once the 18 cars which lined up on the grid passed through turn one, Verstappen and fellow pit lane starter Esteban Ocon were released.

As the field spread out ahead of them, Verstappen caught sight of the tail-enders just in time to spy Gabriel Bortoleto spinning into a barrier. He immediately notified Lambiase that the race was likely to be neutralised.

As the first lap ended, Lewis Hamilton touched Franco Colapinto’s car ahead and Verstappen ran through some of the resulting debris. When the race restarted Verstappen quickly picked off two cars at the first corner but then found he couldn’t gain on Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber.

Lap: 1/71 VER: 1’27.191
Lambiase There’s a mixture of tyre compounds ahead of you outside of the top 10 Max. I’ll keep you posted as and when we get there. But firstly, Ocon, behind you, hard tyre.
Lambiase A reminder for the pit lane speed limiter Max, once you get there.
Lambiase Okay, that’s lights out, Max. Pre start.
Lambiase Car ahead is Hamilton at the moment. Complaining about a puncture or damage ahead for Hamilton.
Verstappen Verstappen catches the rear of the field. Bortoleto crashes in front of him
Safety Car, for sure.
Lambiase And mode six please, Max.

Verstappen Check my car, a lot of debris went flying.
Lap: 2/71 VER: 1’49.007
Lambiase Understood.
Lambiase Safety Car deployed, dash positive.
Verstappen Yeah like a lot of debris flew into the car.
Lambiase Yep, understood. Keeping an eye on it. Just keep working the tyres, Max.
Lambiase So still double yellows turn 10 to turn 11. And display eight. So perhaps just stay right towards the pit entry, Max, there are reports of debris.
Lap: 3/71 VER: 1’46.620
Lambiase Okay Max, we’ve got double yellows from turn nine now to turn 11, turn nine to turn 11. The Safety Car is going to be taking the shortcut at turn 10, essentially just follow the pack. So for reference, Yuki has fitted the medium tyre and Hamilton has also pitted onto the hard.
Lambiase Again stay right, Max, around here.
Lap: 4/71 VER: 1’47.889
Lambiase Same again, Max, turn 10, shortcut.
Lap: 5/71 VER: 1’18.495
Lambiase We are using the standard track this time around. So it is in this lap Max, Safety Car in this lap. So just your bias offset is required. Safety Car is through turn 12. Ahead of you, Colapinto medium tyres. Safety Car in the pit lane.
Verstappen passes Stroll and Colapinto inside turn one at restart
Lap: 6/71 VER: 1’47.461
Lambiase Mode six when you can.

“I don’t think a hard tyre is good”

Verstappen progressed rapidly through the midfield

Verstappen reported poor grip from his tyres and Red Bull saw data which indicated a possible cause. While the Safety Car was deployed in reaction to Charles Leclerc’s retirement, they summoned Verstappen in to swap his tyres, suspecting a puncture.

The driver was not sorry to see the back of the hard tyres he started the race on, and resumed with a fresh set of medium rubber. His radio went quiet for three consecutive laps as he enjoyed clear air and pumped in lap times far quicker than the leaders were managing.

“That’s Russell ahead now”

Lambiase told Verstappen to minimise his time loss when Norris appeared in his mirrors

Verstappen was spared having to overtake Oliver Bearman, Carlos Sainz Jnr, Pierre Gasly and the Racing Bulls drivers as they pitted in front of him. Once he cleared Alexander Albon’s Williams he had a run at the leading drivers.

Now back in clear air, Verstappen wasn’t able to continue gaining on Norris, but had avoided falling out of pit stop range of the race leader. When Norris pitted, he came out behind Verstappen, but Lambiase urged his driver not to get drawn into a fight with him, and instead avoid losing too much time as the McLaren came past on fresher tyres.

Lambiase Just minimise your time loss, into turn one.

“Amazingly you are only 18 seconds to the leader”

Verstappen was able to run new tyres for all four stints

Verstappen’s second stint was his longest of the race, at 27 laps. Red Bull chose not to extend it any longer as he complained about a lack of grip.

Lap: 33/71 VER: 1’16.145
Lambiase How’s the front flap for another stint, please?
Verstappen Ah it’s alright.
Lambiase Understood.
Lambiase So Max, if Russell is looking to hang this out for a one-stop, his options are either soft or hard at this stage. That would be a very long sting for him. Unless he goes for a scr… [message cuts]
Lap: 34/71 VER: 1’19.344
Verstappen Yeah but just focus on my tyres, please. I have no grip.

Lambiase As I say Max, this P4 currently is on merit. We are racing Piastri behind, Russell ahead. Amazingly you are only 18 seconds to the leader.
Verstappen Yeah, I’m on it.

“We’ll go aggressive”

With 17 laps to go, Verstappen’s latest set of mediums were 20 laps old. With Norris and Antonelli gaining, he was unsure whether he wanted to eke them out to the end.

Those around him who had reached Q3 did not have any fresh sets of soft tyres left, but Verstappen’s early exit from qualifying meant he did. Red Bull opted to take advantage, putting one of the new sets on for a final stint.

As Verstappen returned to the track in fourth place and began taking up to a second per lap out of the two Mercedes drivers immediately ahead of him, Lambiase told him “P2 is on here, Max, assuming you can control the deg.”

Lambiase So we’re just monitoring to see the fastest way to the end of the race here Max, whether we can arm ourselves with that new soft tyre in any way.
Lap: 51/71 VER: 1’13.658
Lambiase Something I didn’t think I’d say Max, at the end of the pit lane earlier, you are now race leader.

Lap: 59/71 VER: 1’12.833
Lambiase P2 is on here, Max, assuming you can control the deg.

“One more opportunity into turn one”

While Verstappen got past Russell with little difficulty, by the time he caught Antonelli his soft tyres were beginning to fade. He got within DRS range of the second-placed Mercedes for several laps, but narrowly fell short of passing him.

“Don’t just sit there and be happy with second”

As Verstappen took the chequered flag, Lambiase apologised for the set-up choice which had compromised his Saturday so badly. But Verstappen was pleased the team had opted for an attacking strategy at the end of the race. Team principal Laurent Mekies came on the radio to offer his congratulations.

Verstappen No, it’s done [unclear]. That’s a really, really good race for us. We at least try, you know. Don’t just sit there and be happy with second and third, we try a lot of stuff so it’s something that and thank you very much for today. I think that went, that went really well, so thank you everyone.
Mekies What to say Max, well done, it may not be the win of last year, but it looked as impressive as that from here, so very, very impressed. Well done, never give up.
Verstappen Exactly that, I gave it everything out there, so we keep pushing.
Lambiase And into the pit lane, please, Max.
