Max Verstappen wants Formula 1 to choose a traditional circuit to take Zandvoort’s place when it disappears from the schedule after next season.

The series announced last year the Dutch Grand Prix will make its final appearance as part of the 2026 F1 calendar.

Most new additions to the F1 schedule in recent years have been street or temporary circuits. The series will race at a new street circuit in Madrid next year and added similar venues in Las Vegas in 2023 and Miami in 2022.

However Verstappen wants F1 to choose a permanent circuit to fill the gap left by Zandvoort. “As long as we don’t add another street circuit, then I’m happy,” he said.

He said “it’s a shame” F1 will leave the venue just five years after returning to the renovated track. “But what can you do about it? I’m already very proud that I’ve had a home grand prix for a few years. We’re just going to make the best out of it, enjoy it a bit more.

“Even when F1 is not here, it’s still a great track to drive in any car. So, for sure, I’ll be back.”

Verstappen won the first three Dutch grands prix after the event returned to the calendar in 2021 and finished second to Lando Norris last year. The track regularly attracts large crowds of enthusiastic supporters of the reigning world champion.

“It definitely brings a smile to my face when I’m driving or even driving out of the pit box,” he said. “Seeing that amount of orange always is very special.

“For sure, it’s not only about the driving – it’s quite a bit of a party going on those three days. They always seem to have a great time, and I think that’s also very important when you come to a grand prix.”
