Vedanta Aluminium expands electric forklift fleet to 142 units

Vedanta Aluminium has expanded its lithium-ion battery-powered electric forklift fleet to 142 units across its operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, more than doubling its previous deployment. At the Jharsuguda smelter, where 116 forklifts have been deployed, the company estimates the initiative will eliminate about 4,450 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions annually and reduce diesel consumption by 16.3 lakh litres each year. Vedanta said the transition also contributes to improved workplace safety and supports lower maintenance through faster charging systems.The company stated that the expansion aligns with its target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and its goal of decarbonising its light motor vehicle fleet by 2030.

Workforce inclusion

Vedanta Aluminium said the initiative has opened new roles for women and transgender professionals operating the forklifts. The company also highlighted the deployment of India’s first 10-tonne capacity electric forklifts at the Jharsuguda smelter.

CEO Rajiv Kumar said the milestone reflects the company’s approach to sustainability as a driver of transformation and noted that the initiative has supported both operational requirements and environmental objectives.Vedanta Aluminium said the expansion demonstrates how industrial operations can reduce emissions while maintaining productivity and operational performance.
