Vintage vehicle enthusiasts in Uttar Pradesh can now officially register their prized cars and bikes in the “vintage” category, with the state transport department launching the facility in line with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ (MoRTH) 2021 notification, according to a PTI report. Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh said the move will provide clarity, ease compliance and preserve the heritage value of such vehicles. “Vintage registration is not for daily or commercial use; it is meant to preserve the vehicle’s original technical configuration and maintain orderly records,” he said.As per central guidelines, vintage vehicles are defined as two-wheelers or four-wheelers over 50 years old from the date of first registration and must remain in their original form without major modifications.Vintage vehicles will carry a unique number plate format — “UP VA YY xxxx” — and are exempt from high-security plates. Officials emphasised they cannot be used for daily commuting or commercial activity.
Owners need to apply through their local RTO/ARTO, with Motor Vehicle Inspectors verifying originality. Registration fees are ₹20,000 for new RCs and ₹5,000 for renewals. A vintage RC will be valid for 10 years and renewable every five years.
