We examine Elon Musk’s latest plan for Tesla, such as it is. Plus: hear from an InsideEVs reporter how the Slate Truck is progressing.
Here’s the thing I think every time I doubt Elon Musk: I am, to date, only a successful multi-thousandaire. I am not the world’s richest man, and my employer, the Motorsport Network, did not offer me a $1 trillion pay package this morning.
But I know a thing or two about cars, and the fact that Tesla’s latest “Master Plan” doesn’t include much about them at all—except in the autonomous sense—strikes me as odd. My InsideEVs Plugged-In Podcast co-host Tim Levin agrees with me, and on this week’s episode, we unpack what’s in that plan.
Which is hard to do, honestly, because that “plan” was 900 words and a short video about creating a “technological renaissance through the development of electric vehicles, energy products and humanoid robots,” that can “accelerate global prosperity and human thriving.” A lot of buzzwords, not much in the way of a plan—especially since the last one was a 41-page white paper about pretty much the same thing. It led several news outlets and Tesla observers to wonder if it was AI-generated. What does it all mean?
Tune in as we try and sort it out. Also on this week’s episode, you will hear from InsideEVs reporter Kevin Williams, who visited Slate Auto’s nascent factory in Indiana last week. Kevin’s got updates on how the allegedly $25,000-ish electric truck is coming along, and how the company intends to manage the end of the electric-vehicle tax credit—as well as newfound competition from Ford. And lastly, we’ll take a look at the record EV sales in August and try to game out what happens when the tax credits end.
