Lance Stroll has withdrawn from the Spanish Grand Prix.
His Aston martin team issued a statement on Saturday evening saying he was suffering pain relating to his 2023 cycling injury.
“Over the course of the past six weeks Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023,” the team said.
“As a result his medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and he will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery.”
Stroll started the 2023 season with screws in his right wrist after coming off his bike while training in the winter break. The injury prevented him from participating in pre-season testing but he returned in time for the season-opening race.
He provisionally qualified 14th for this weekend’s race. As he took part in qualifying for this weekend’s grand prix, Aston Martin cannot replace him with another driver.
Stroll was summoned to attend a meeting with the stewards over a potential rules infraction after the session. However the meeting was delayed “due to unforeseen circumstances”, according to the stewards.

As a result, the outcome of today’s qualifying session for the Spanish Grand Prix remains provisional.
The stewards issued the final classification of the qualifying session following its conclusion on Saturday evening. However they noted it remains “subject to change based on the outcome of summons 20, the hearing of which has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.”
The summons was issued to Stroll for “allegedly [failing] to be weighed immediately after qualifying.” He was originally due to meet the stewards at 5:45pm local time.
Drivers are required to be weighed after qualifying in order to ensure the car complies with the minimum mass limit. F1’s rules state: “Each driver must be weighed by the technical delegate at the end of the last part of the qualifying session or sprint qualifying session in which they participated.
“At the end of the qualifying session or the sprint qualifying session all cars which took part in Q3 […] will be weighed. If a driver wishes to leave his car before it is weighed, he must ask the technical delegate to weigh him in order that this weight may be added to that of the car.”
The race directors’ event notes added further details which applied to Stroll as he was eliminated in Q2. “Any driver who finished participating in the qualifying sessions after Q1 and Q2 must proceed through the pit lane directly to the FIA scales immediately after they have returned to their team’s garage,” it stated. “The drivers may not drink anything or do anything which increases their weight before it is recorded by the FIA.”

After qualifying Stroll said he had difficulties with his car’s balance over the first two days at Circuit de Catalunya.
“It was pretty bad all weekend,” he said. “Just struggling with the car and not able to put the laps together.”
“[It’s] the entry stability on the brakes and then off the brakes,” he added. “Just a lot of understeer, I’ve been struggling to drive around that so it’s been tough.”
