George Russell out-ran Max Verstappen to score his first victory of the season in the Canadian Grand Prix.
But the race came to a dramatic end as Lando Norris crashed into his team mate and championship rival Oscar Piastri. Norris retired on the spot, while Piastri survived the contact and finished fourth.
Russell kept his lead from the start and maintained his advantage over his rival despite Red Bull pulling Verstappen into the pits earlier than Russell for each of his two visits.
Verstappen made his second pit stop shortly after half distance as Russell’s team mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli drew within range of the Red Bull. Antonelli moved into contention by passing Oscar Piastri for third place at the start.
Over the final stint, Verstappen closed on Russell as they fought their way through a cluster of backmarkers. However once they emerged from the queue Russell was able to restore his advantage over the Red Bull driver.
Antonelli used the same traffic to briefly escape the pressure from Piastri behind. But the McLaren driver was back within DRS range of him soon afterwards.
He had his team mate Norris for company, however. Norris dived down the inside of Piastri at turn 10 and briefly got ahead, but Piastri repassed him at the final chicane.

Norris made another bid to get alongside as they crossed the start/finish line but misjudged his move badly and ran into the back of his team mate. He lost his front wing and damaged his suspension against the pit wall, putting him out.
The Safety Car was deployed in reaction to the incident and stayed out until the chequered flag dropped. Verstappen accused Russell of braking excessively at one point, while the leader claimed his rival had overtaken him behind the Safety Car. The stewards have not noted the incident.
Antonelli took his first podium finish with third ahead of Piastri. The Ferrari drivers came next, Charles Leclerc fifth ahead of Lewis Hamilton who picked up damage when he hit an animal early in the race.
Fernando Alonso scored points for the second race in a row with seventh place. Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz Jnr completed the points positions but the stewards are investigating a potential incident between the pair involving erratic driving.
Update: Russell keeps Canadian GP victory as Red Bull fail in bid to promote Verstappen
