Round-up: Las Vegas GP sponsors set new deal, Sargeant plans racing return and more

Welcome to Thursday’s edition of the RaceFans round-up.

Comment of the day

Liberty Media should find a more imaginative way to combine Formula 1, Moto GP and their support series across a single race weekend, says @Krommenaas:

That would be bad for both of them, but what would be cool is to mix up the junior categories. Like have Moto 2 during an F1 weekend, and F2 during a Moto GP weekend, when the circuit allows it. Having just experienced my first F1 weekend live (in Spa), I would have quite enjoyed the variation, and it might have kindled my interested in Moto racing.

Las Vegas Grand Prix extended through 2027 via $20M LVCVA sponsorship (Las Vegas Review-Journal)

Spa-Francorchamps circuit chairman Melchior Wathelet: ‘The new sponsorship deal includes costs the LVCVA will incur for a transportation program for Strip employees during race weekends and for tickets purchased by its tourism arm. Those costs in previous years were approved separately, according to Steve Hill, LVCVA president and CEO. The sponsorship accounts for about $7.5 million each year for 2026 and 2027, with $2.5 million tied to the ticket purchases and transportation program, Hill said.’

Aspiring F1 driver makes his pitch at Reds game (Major League Baseball)

‘You always start really young when you’re five, six years old. I guess over the years, I’ve seen similarities with the Triple-A guys. They’re all really good. It’s just about the few who get the chance. It’s the same as F2 and F1. The guys in F2 are good. There are just so many spots on a grid.’

FIA Q&A: How is climate change impacting motorsports? (Sustainability Mag)

‘Nearly every site on the Formula 1 and Formula E calendars are facing issues with heat. On top of that, there are flooding and storm risks, as we saw in Imola a couple of years ago. Other extreme weather risks include, in some cases, wildfire smoke, tornados and sandstorms. Clearly, these conditions impact the safety of everyone involved, including fans and the local host communities, and could lead to major disruption in the race calendar.’

Recent flooding won’t impact Milwaukee IndyCar race (Racer)

‘The onrush of water filled the tunnel that runs beneath turn four at the Milwaukee Mile and was more than a foot deep in some areas of the track as attendees leaving the state fair were seen driving through temporary rivers that reached their car doors.’

Silverstone Autosport BRDC Award to not take place in 2025 (Formula Scout)

Derek Warwick: ‘All F1 teams now have their own young driver programmes, which I like to think came from being aware and being involved with our very own young driver programme over the years. I feel now is a good time to stop and re-evaluate the award.’

Triathlon gets F1-style makeover as endurance sports boom (Financial Times)

‘The PTO, led by chief executive Sam Renouf, is planning to use its new financing to grow its flagship T100 triathlon series, which stages events around the world over the course of a season in the style of Formula 1. The course for professionals is a 2km swim, 80km bike ride and 18km run, with each race forming part of a season of events in destinations including Singapore, San Francisco and the French Riviera.’

Van Eerd convicted in fraud investigation (Sportscar365)

‘Van Eerd’s own explanation, that the money was linked to his racing hobbies, was also rejected as implausible by the prosecution. The Dutchman is understood to own a large collection of racing cars, including historic Formula 1 machinery.’
