District magistrate (DM) Chandrashekhar Singh on Monday flagged off 15 road safety awareness vehicles that would spread awareness about road safety and traffic rules. He said road safety month is being observed from January 1 to 31, and the vehicles would spread awareness about the traffic rules. He asked people to adhere to safety rules to minimise instances of road accidents.

“The vehicles have been flagged with a view to making the people aware of the road safety rules and encouraging them to observe them to reduce road accidents,” said the DM here on Monday. He said that the vehicles would visit both rural and urban areas during the road safety month, adding that good Samaritans engaged in saving lives of those injured in road accidents, are also being encouraged.

“The statistics say that around 13 lakh deaths and five crore injuries take place in road accidents worldwide every year. Our country tops the chart with 10% of total deaths occurring across the globe due to road accidents,” said the DM. “In Patna, as many as 415 road accidents, 196 deaths and 201 injuries were recorded in 2022,” he added.

The DM warned that strict action would be taken against those found violating traffic rules and they would be identified through CCTV cameras installed across the district. “The integrated traffic management system being implemented ensures red light violation detection and automatic number plate recognition with the help of sophisticated techniques, ensuring strict action against traffic rule breakers,” he said.
