Red Bull took aim at rivals McLaren in a social media post mocking their rival’s double disqualification from last weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix.
The team used its simracing social media channels to draw fresh attention to the stewards’ decision which cost Max Verstappen’s championship rivals the points they scored in Saturday’s race.
Both McLaren drivers were disqualified after post-race inspections discovered the plank assemblies on the undersides of their cars had worn beneath the minimum legal limit of 9mm. Piastri’s was worn by as much as 8.74mm, Norris’s by up to 8.88mm, though the stewards noted a subsequent re-measurement later found the values were “even lower” than this.
Red Bull’s simracing division reacted by posting a video on multiple platforms bearing the text “how not to get a DQ” and showing the rear ride height adjustment option in the official Formula 1 game.
McLaren’s double disqualification has boosted Verstappen’s chances of scoring a fifth consecutive world championship victory. Norris and Piastri originally finished second and fourth respectively, meaning Verstappen was set to leave Las Vegas 42 points behind championship leader Norris and 12 behind Piastri.
However following the change to the classification Verstappen is level on points with Piastri and both trail Norris by 24. There is a maximum of 58 points available per driver over the remaining two rounds.
The rivalry between McLaren and Red Bull has flared up on several occasions, even before Norris challenged Verstappen for the championship in 2024. In 2022 former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner accused McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown of causing his team to suffer “abuse” after he urged the FIA to take strong action against any teams which exceeded the budget cap. Red Bull was found that year to have over-spent by £1.8 million during the previous season.
The mutual antagonism continued until Horner’s departure from the team earlier this year, prior to which he called Brown a “prick”. Brown welcomed Horner’s replacement, Laurent Mekies, saying the change had made F1 a “healthier” place.
