Oscar Piastri led second practice in Singapore as crashes caused two red flag interruptions.

The session also saw a bizarre incident in the pits between Piastri’s team mate Lando Norris and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc. The pair made contact as they drove from their garages to the fast lane of the pits when the session resumed. Norris’s car hit the pit wall and McLaren had to replace his front wing.

The other two incidents took place at somewhat higher speeds. George Russell caused the first red flag when the rear end of his Mercedes broke free as he attempted to swing into turn 16. The W16 straightened up and went nose-first into the barrier, breaking his front wing and causing suspension damage.

Russell was able to limp back into the pits but the session was red-flagged so the debris could be recovered and the barrier realigned. Once it resumed, almost every driver rejoined on soft tyres, intending to perform qualifying simulation runs.

However the session was swiftly red-flagged again after Liam Lawson had an even more spectacular crash one corner further on from Russell’s. The Racing Bulls driver clouted the barrier on the right-hand side, damaging that side of his car and skidding towards the pit lane entrance in a shower of sparks.

The red flags came out again. Race control briefly advised drivers the pit lane entrance was closed, then reversed the call so the cars could come in.

It was during the subsequent resumption that Leclerc and Norris tangled. The McLaren driver was passing the Ferrari garage as Leclerc was waved out directly into the side of Norris’s car. Unsurprisingly the stewards are investigating the incident.

There was little more than 10 minutes left to run in the session when the remaining drivers headed out for the final time. Fernando Alonso, who was quickest in the first practice session, briefly headed the times before being displaced by Max Verstappen.

Piastri then lowered the best time of the day to a 1’30.714, a mere hundredth of a second faster than the best time from the same session last year. Norris seemed unhappy with his car, abandoned one lap after running wide, and ended up almost half a second slower than his team mate.

Isack Hadjar brought some cheer to Racing Bulls after Lawson’s crash by putting their remaining car second on the times sheet. Lance Stroll backed his team mate up with the sixth-fastest time ahead of Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz Jnr. It was a difficult session for Ferrari, however, as their drivers filled the last places in the top 10.
