Lando Norris has won his home race for the first time after his team mate was penalised for a Safety Car infringement.
Oscar Piastri was given a 10-second time penalty for slowing abruptly at the end of a Safety Car period earlier in the race. He served the penalty when he pitted to switch from intermediate to slick tyres as the track dried, and Norris grabbed the opportunity to move ahead of his team mate through the pits.
Both McLaren drivers passed Max Verstappen earlier in the race, though a slow pit stop dropped Norris back behind him. The Red Bull driver then took himself out of contention for victory by spinning shortly after Piastri’s contentious Safety Car restart.
Nico Hulkenberg delivered a sensation result by ending his career-long wait for a podium finish at his 239th attempt. He took full advantage of the mixed conditions, passing Lance Stroll on his way to third.
Lewis Hamilton could have beaten him to the place but went off shortly after switching to slick tyres at the end of the race. He came in fourth. Stroll ran third earlier in the race but was passed by Verstappen and Pierre Gasly on the final tour.
Alexander Albon brought points for Williams with eighth. Fernando Alonso fumed about his strategy and made an early switch to slicks at the end for ninth place. George Russell went off after he switched to slicks at the end and finished 10th.
