Lando Norris scored a vital victory in the sprint race at Interlagos after his team mate and championship rival Oscar Piastri crashed out.
The McLaren driver withstood heavy pressure from Andrea Kimi Antonelli over the final laps of the race but hung on to take a maximum eight points which increased his championship lead to nine.
The race was red-flagged after Piastri crashed out of third place behind Norris and Antonelli on the damp track. He spun on a wet kerb in the Curva do Sol moments after Norris’s car had thrown up some water at the same corner.
Nico Hulkenberg and Franco Colapinto crashed at the same corner seconds later as the yellow flags appeared for Piastri’s crash. Hulkenberg was able to continue but with the barrier heavily damaged race control took the decision to red-flag the race.
For the restart, Norris switched from the medium tyre compound to a set of softs. Antonelli did the reverse, and stalked the McLaren following the rolling restart. Over the final laps Antonelli drew within DRS range but was never able to make a serious attempt to attack the McLaren.
George Russell was promoted to third place by Piastri’s crash and joined his team mate on the podium. Max Verstappen passed Fernando Alonso at the initial start and held him back at the restart for fourth, but he made plain to his team he was still unhappy with his car’s balance.
Alonso, who restarted the race on soft tyres, spent most of the race defending his position from the Ferrari drivers. Charles Leclerc managed to pierce his defences but Lewis Hamilton, who gained three places on lap one, had to settle for seventh place behind him.

Pierre Gasly expressed his impatience with the Ferrari drivers’ inability to pass Alonso, but took matters into his own hands and relieved Lance Stroll of the final points position. Isack Hadjar completed the top 10. His team mate Liam Lawson and Haas’s Oliver Bearman are under investigation for a collision between them on the first lap.
The race ended dramatically for Gabriel Bortoleto who crashed spectacularly at the Senna S as the final lap began. He was sizing up Alexander Albon’s Williams for a pass when he lost control, struck the wall on the inside of the corner and ricocheted into a barrier on the outside, totalling his Sauber.
