Lando Norris led the first practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix narrowly ahead of his McLaren team mate Oscar Piastri.

The pair claimed the front row of the grid for last year’s race at the Hungaroring, Norris just two hundredths of a second ahead of his team mate. But this time Piastri was even closer than that, the pair separated by just 0.019 seconds.

However Charles Leclerc signalled the championship leaders might not have things all their own this way. The Ferrari driver lapped just two tenths of a second off Norris’s benchmark time. His team mate Lewis Hamilton was a further four-tenths of a second behind after locking up heavily at turn one as he attempted to begin a second flying lap on a set of the soft compound tyres.

The Ferraris were separated by a Red Bull-livered car, albeit one which did not belong to Max Verstappen. Isack Hadjar put in a strong lap for Racing Bulls for fourth place.

Verstappen, reunited with his regular race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, ended the session only ninth. Team mate Yuki Tsunoda was four-tenths of a second behind but in the close field they were separated by eight places.

Mercedes came into the weekend expecting this to be one of their toughest tracks. Their cars took seventh and eighth, Andrea Kimi Antonelli ahead of George Russell, the pair trailing Oliver Bearman in the Haas.

Lance Stroll took the final place in the top 10, three-tenths of a second faster than Felipe Drugovich, who substituted for Fernando Alonso. Aston Martin are yet to confirm whether Alonso will return to the car for second practice.

Alexander Albon produced some quick laps early in the session following an engine change in his Williams. However he fell to 11th as the chequered flag fell.

Paul Aron made his second appearance in a practice session for Sauber but his running was cut short by an unidentified problem. He pulled the C45 to a halt at the penultimate corner on his 10th lap.
