The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will deploy Network Survey Vehicles (NSV) across 23 states covering 20,933 km of National Highways to collect, process and analyse road inventory and pavement condition data.
The initiative aims to gather data on road defects such as surface cracking, potholes and patches. The collected information will help identify deficiencies in road conditions and guide corrective measures for maintenance.
Data collection and analysis
The NSV surveys will use 3D laser-based systems equipped with 360-degree cameras, DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and DMI (Distance Measuring Indicator). The vehicles will automatically capture and report road defects without human intervention. Data acquisition and processing software will measure and report road inventory and pavement condition data for all projects involving 2, 4, 6 and 8-lane highways. Surveys will be conducted before the start of work and at six-month intervals thereafter.Data collected through NSV surveys will be uploaded to NHAI’s AI-based Data Lake portal. A team of experts will analyse the information to generate actionable insights. The data will be preserved for future technical use in the Road Asset Management system according to government guidelines.
Tender and implementation
NHAI has invited bids from qualified companies to implement the NSV survey initiative. The vehicles will support infrastructure planning, asset management and pavement maintenance across the National Highway network.
