Both the Delhi govt and the road transport ministry have worked out plans to improve major highway stretches falling in the national capital to increase their capacity for smooth traffic flow.

Fast-tracking plans for improvement of key National Highway (NH) stretches in Delhi for better traffic flow — Ashram-Badarpur (NH-2), Haryana Border-Punjabi Bagh (NH-9) and Mehrauli-Haryana Border (NH-148) — the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited bids for preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) of these corridors.Last month, NHAI had invited bids for preparing the DPR for building an elevated corridor from INA to Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj and its further extension to Gurgaon-Faridabad Road. The Centre swung into action soon after BJP formed the govt in the city. Both the Delhi govt and the road transport ministry have worked out plans to improve major highway stretches falling in the national capital to increase their capacity for smooth traffic flow.“The plans are to work on all the stretches simultaneously. While we have built high speed corridors connecting Delhi with the rest of the country, getting out of Delhi takes a long time because of huge traffic flow on all arterial road. Once DPRs for all four corridors are completed, we will start work,” said an official privy to the plans.

All three NH stretches get choked during peak hours. While the opening of DND-Jaitpur-Faridabad link of Delhi-Mumbai Expressway by this year-end is likely to reduce some traffic on the Ashram-Badarpur stretch of NH-2, officials said there was a need to improve this section as large share of traffic heading towards Faridabad would continue to use this stretch.

It’s no different in the case of Haryana-Delhi Border to Punjabi Bagh Road (NH-9) and Mehrauli to Delhi-Haryana Border. Sources said discussions are at an advanced stage to entrust all these stretches to NHAI for carrying out improvement works.
