Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Sunday underlined the need to regulate vehicle population in the state, saying possession of vehicles would have to be linked to availability of parking space. Also outlining a plan to check irregular parking on roads, he said Mumbai, Thane, and Pune civic bodies should map all parking spaces and bring them on to a single app. He said once the spaces are on the app, then parking rules could be enforced.
“Public parking spaces have been created in large numbers in Mumbai, and many are lying unused. In future, we want to implement the rule that if you do not have parking, then you cannot purchase a vehicle,” said Fadnavis.
“Why don’t we instead say that if you want to purchase a vehicle but do not have parking space, then through our app, you can rent a parking space? We can provide this facility whereby parking on roads, slowing traffic, and accidents can be avoided,” he said.
Fadnavis chose to credit state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik for the idea.
